Zentangle: What is it?

Zentangle

Zentangling is a meditative art technique that involves combining patterns to create a beautiful finished work. It is fun and relaxing and quite simple to master. The best part is, zentangling subconsciously immerses you into the process, making you temporarily unaware of the surroundings. It makes you willingly draw all your attention towards it. In other words, it is a creative form of meditation.

Was that really definitive? Ugh, I hate definitions.

Well, you get the point.

Create Your Own Zentangle

No special training is needed to become a zentangle master. It is timeless and can be done at any time. It is usually done on paper tiles but Mukta doesn’t do that much (heh heh).

To create your own zentangle, all you have to do is follow a few simple steps.

Step One: The Strings

Sketch out your chosen… thing. Anything. When you are done, the first step comes in.
See those thin lines? Those are what I call strings. Cover your object with such strings, leaving good amounts of space empty. That’s the space you are going to fill in.

Step 2: The Patterns

Zentangle patterns are infinite, and I mean it. You can use pre-defined patterns that you can look for at websites like tanglepatterns.com, or you can create your own. Start filling the spaces, one pattern at a time.

Step 3: Your Creation

After you’ve filled in all the spaces, you’ll end up with a one-of-a-kind creation that I guarantee you’ll be proud of.

Step 4: The Finishing Touches

After you’re done, you can put in a bit of pencil shading to give your work a three-dimensional feel.

And that’s it. It’s as simple as that.

I’m not the best at drawing, but I have found a passion for zentangle that doesn’t require it. All I need is will, patience and concentration to create something distinctive and beautiful.

Wanna Begin?

Zentangle is maddeningly addictive, and I’m not surprised if you’d like to begin already. To start, take a blank page and draw a few squares that you can fill with patterns.

No more explanation needed.

Tips by the Elf

  • Zentangle looks best when done with a black pen on white paper.
  • There are no mistakes in zentangle. Don’t use pencils if you can help it, and if you do, don’t erase.
  • NO RULERS, PLEASE. Draw all lines freehand.
  • Find yourself an airy space and lots of free time. You’re going to need it.
  • Zentangle is all the cooler when you have pens with different nibs (ASDFGHJKL heeellllppp I’m mad over zentangle pennnnnsssss aaarrrrrggghhhhh).Divider

Aaannnndd I Survived.

If you have a blog, post it and leave a link below!

I know that the possibilities of that happening are really, really low, but anyway…

    • Phrbt, that’s NOTHING. I didn’t know the word obnoxious existed until LAST YEAR. I know, my vocabulary really needs some muscle flexing… XD
